American Avocet

I find it fascinating that the birds we saw in Texas are migrating north at the same time we are. This black-and-white wading bird has a distinctive bent bill and is continually dipping his head in the water for food. The rusty head and neck is much more colorful than the off-white it exhibited this winter.

I took this photograph this evening in the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge near Brigham City, Utah. I used a Nikon Z5 camera using a NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S lens (1/640 sec at ƒ/5.6, ISO 100, 400mm). I edited the image in Adobe Lightroom.
